I need a job, but I don’t have the exact skills they are looking for!

This happens to everyone. We find the perfect job advertised, and then realize the skills they require don’t quite match those on our resume. But don’t panic! This doesn’t necessarily mean that job is out of reach! We all possess a number of skills that are known as “transferable skills”. In a nutshell, this means we have certain skills that can be used over a number of tasks. Look at the skills the employer is looking for in the job ad. Do you see any that look familiar? Think outside of the box. Most often when we look through our employment history, we will find that we did tasks that were similar in nature; that required the same pattern or thought process. Then it’s just a matter of matching up your experience to the skill, and showing this on your resume.
