Job Hunter's Tip of the Week #14 - So now I know what my resume should include, but what about what SHOULDN’T be on there?
Sometimes we can tend to go a little overboard with our resumes, and start including things that employers really don’t need to know, or care to know about us. So here’s a list of what shouldn’t be included in your resume:
- Your Social Insurance Number
- Your personal information, such as date of birth, height, weight, or health
- Your religious or political beliefs, nothing that can cause controversy
- Your race or gender
- Your marital status or if you have any children
- Your previous salary or expected salary
- And especially…nothing at all that is NEGATIVE
To summarize, include only the information that will tell the employer about your skills, achievements and qualifications for the job you're seeking.
Another thing you may want to consider leaving off is any jobs that are not related to the type of work you’re looking for. But only do this if you won’t be left with a large employment gap in your history. Also be careful when listing your employment history to not go back too far. The dates will give away your age, and despite the fact that it is illegal to exclude someone based on that fact, it still happens.
Stay tuned next week for more about writing a job winning resume!
