Job Hunter's Tip of the Week #12 -
Someone gave me a tip on a job last week, but I forgot to follow up on it? Is it too late now?

The answer to that question is both yes and no. No, it isn’t too late because there is still a chance that the job might be available. And yes, it is too late because it has probably already been filled. When someone in your network has thought of you and passed along a job tip, don’t delay in checking it out. The time frame that an employer is looking to hire in can vary. Sometimes they are fortunate enough to be given 2 weeks notice from the employee before they need to fill that space. And then there are those who leave right away, and the search for someone to replace them is desperate. Since you can’t be sure what boat this employer is in, your best bet is to get yourself down to their place of business as soon as possible! If you can’t get there right away, the second best thing is to make a phone call. But make sure you speak to the person who is in charge of hiring!
The importance of following up doesn’t just apply to job leads. It also applies to job opportunities you have recently applied for. Many people work hard to get their applications and resumes out there. And then waste it all by sitting by the phone waiting for a call. Here’s a scenario: An employer advertises for a full time position with great benefits. She receives 65 resumes from job seekers. Out of that 65 people, one person calls her a few days later to ensure she received the resume and to tell the employer how interested he is in working for her company. Who do you think is in the lead for the position? When that employer goes through the list of names, the one that is going to jump out at her is the person who took the time to follow up. Now I’m sure your asking, what about the one’s that say “no phone calls please”? And in those situations, don’t call. But if they are the type of business where you can drop by and speak with the manager, even better opportunity to introduce yourself. Just be sure if you’re stopping by, to be dressed for an interview. And always carry copies of your resume with you just incase. Keep following up and stay on top of your employment search!
