Job Hunter's Tip of the Week - #6 - I’ve been home with my kids for the last 10 years. How am I going to find a job now?
This is one of the most common situations today in finding employment. What to do after such a long time out of the workforce? The first thing to do is to sit down and assess your most marketable skills. The jobs you held before the children were born haven’t disappeared, and neither have the skills you learned while doing them. And what about new one’s you have gained since? There are loads of skills that come with managing a household. Did you do any volunteer work during this time? Volunteering can mean just as much to an employer as a paid position does, if you acquired the skills they are looking for. Now what about the skills you lack? Perhaps its computers or typing that you need? Most Access centers or Community Colleges offer courses that can give you an introduction into different topics, like computers or French. Don’t look at your absence as a huge barrier to finding a new job…work with it!
